Justin Hoover develops artistic projects and community engagement platforms. His work looks at issues of cultural disjuncture, language and migration through the lens of visual art, social practice and performance.
He has held positions as the Curator of the Chinese-American Museum of Los Angeles, Creative Director of Fort Mason Center, Curator and Gallery Director of SOMArts, and Curator of Exhibitions at the Santa Cruz Museum of Art and History. He founded and directs CAS and works as the Curator of the Sculpture Quadrennial Riga, Latvia. He was 2018 the Curator in Residence for Asia and the Pacific at 1A Space Hong Kong, and is the 2019-2020 Curator in Residence at Disjecta, Portland, OR.
His projects have received major funding from the National Endowment for the Arts, the US Department of State's Bureau of Education and Cultural Affairs, the California Arts Council, the Walter and Elise Haas fund (twice), the Kenneth Rainin Foundation, WESTAF, the San Francisco Arts Commission and more, and he has exhibited in the US Pavilion of the Venice Biennale for Architecture, 2012 among other venues in the US.
